With the exhibition,
The Road So Far, metaphor contemporary art takes stock of its first four years with a selected group of artists from past exhibitions and some new faces. Since opening in October of 2001, Rene Lynch and Julian Jackson, the directors and curators of metaphor have highlighted a diverse series of contemporary themes and along the way exhibited the work of over 200 artists. Both active artists themselves, their curatorial vision has from the start embraced a poetic undercurrent, a clarity of vision, intent, and execution. The Road So Far showcases the work of 12 artists whose works more than fulfill those criteria with wit, energy, and grace.

Charles Yuen populates his lush and painterly canvases with an inventive vocabulary of secret clues and odd figures nosing about various of life's absurdities. Tricia Wright utilizes acerbic graphic precision and brilliant color in a subtle investigation of domesticity. Ilene Sunshine brings the outdoors in, and cleverly reconfigured in a site specific installation for our front window. Margaret Neill's paintings navigate a gentle and enriching flow through fields of lambent color. Mary Judge lines meditative patterns on marble with warm powdered earth. Mary Ting opens her subconscious and takes us to a place of dreams in her sculptural installation. Lissi Sigillo presents a tight, bright series of highly compressed and energized abstractions. Julie Evans continues her rich investigation of colors, fields, and forms inspired by the arts and ambience of the Indian sub-continent. Julie Gross finds the edges of color in her undulating and beautifully composed paintings. Stephen Nguyen's atmospheric paintings explore the shadow world of the urban night, testing the limits of perception. Martin Kruck invites us on an intriguing existential journey across open water in his large scale installation of photographs while Jung Hyang Kim's paintings referencing the "Pattern and Decoration" style, revisit the gardens of summer with her lush palette and fecund fields of flowers.
