metaphor contemporary art
co-directors and founders: Rene Lynch and Julian Jackson
metaphor contemporary art exhibits new works of exceptional quality by
emerging and mid-career artists. Our focus is on art that surprises, engages and
challenges the viewer. We exhibit both image based and abstract work in all media
with particular attention to painting, works on paper and installation. The
unifying basis to our curatorial approach is a clarity of vision, intent and
execution. As a Brooklyn based gallery we are well placed in a vibrant community
of artists. Our program consists of about 15 shows per year with the majority
being solo exhibits and the remainder group shows curated on a theme basis. A
complete catalogue of exhibitions may be viewed in the online archives.
metaphor contemporary art was founded in 2001. Originally the gallery was
located in our 11th floor loft in Dumbo Brooklyn adjacent to our own studios. As
working painters we have a passionate and intimate relationship to art. Our
curatorial perspective and our reputation as knowledgeable gallerists with an
inspired presentation style is due in part to a personal understanding of the
practice and motivation of art making. We have maintained an ongoing commitment
to creating our own art and exhibit in various cities throughout the U.S. and
in Europe. To view our art visit www.julianjacksonstudio.com and www.renelynch.com
In May 2004 metaphor moved from Dumbo to a newly renovated street level
gallery space on Atlantic Avenue in central Brooklyn near the B.A.M. cultural
district. The main gallery space has an expansive 18 foot ceiling ideal for
exhibiting large scale paintings, sculpture and installation. There is an additional
mezzanine gallery which serves as a project room for the exhibition of smaller
scale work and projects by emerging artists.
metaphor's publications include full color catalogues Tricia Wright, with an

We have been successful in placing the work of gallery artists into numerous
private and corporate collections including Progressive Corporation, Pfizer
Corporation and Wellington Management. Our price range is between $100. and
$12,000. By maintaining a diverse inventory we have developed an interested
following of young collectors who are just beginning to make their first art
purchases to seasoned art buyers who respect our good "eye" for talent and quality.
